О Талибе Квели в хип-хоп сообществе принято говорить чуть ли не с придыханием. В конце девяностых, когда казалось, что от засилья коммерческого рэпа не продохнуть, а от bling-bling слепило глаза, он вместе с Mos Def и прочими артистами Rawkus Records поднял трускул рэп на новый уровень. Позже чуть было не вышел на уровень настоящей популярности, но даже там держал себя строго, не прогибаясь под формат. Скорее, он создавал свой, новый – с музыкой от Kanye West и с цитатой от Jay-Z: «If skills sold/Truth be told/I'd probably be/Lyricly/Talib Kweli».

Повезло не только с родителями - друзья тоже были, что надо. Первый из них - Danthe Smith (известный как Mos Def), с которым Kweli вместе учился актерскому мастерству. Второй - Tony Cotrell, он же DJ Hi-Tek. Знакомство с ним состоялось в Цинциннати, где Hi-Tek работал ди-джеем и продюсировал местную рэп-группку Mood. Впечатленный рифмами Талиба, он привлек его к участию в нескольких треках на альбоме 97-го года “Doom”. Далее к парочке присоединился разочарованный несложившейся на тот момент актерской карьерой Mos Def. Возникший проект Black Star вылился в альбом “Mos Def And Talib Kweli Are Black Star”, ставший одним из самых обсуждаемых проектов 1998 года. В те дни, когда на пике был мэйнстрим east-coast-рэпа, и королями Нью-Йорка считались такие монстры, как Puff Daddy, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, трио Black Star осмеливалось возрождать традиции золотого века хип-хопа, ориентируясь в первую голову на творчество таких мастеров, как Eric B & Rakim, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest. Black Star стал успешным толчком для сольных карьер каждого из трех артистов - отправной точкой, начиная с которой векторы их творческой жизни постепенно становились разнонаправленными. Сначала Mos Def вновь решил сосредоточиться на работе в театре и тв. В 2000 году оставшиеся вдвоем Kweli и Hi-Tek возрождают проект Reflection Eternal и издают одноименный альбом.

Успех всегда вызывает пристальное внимание к последующим шагам. Авансы надо оправдывать, а их было роздано немало. И от того, удастся ли это сделать, зависит зачастую вся дальнейшая карьера артиста. У Талиба все вышло как нельзя лучше - альбом “Reflection Eternal” был тепло встречен как критикой, так и простыми слушателями. После этого релиза Талиб Квели - величина на альтернативной рэп-сцене. И одиночка - альбомом “Reflection Eternal” завершилось длительное сотрудничество Квели с DJ Hi-Tek

Следующий диск Талиба - “Quality” (2002), неправда ли созвучно Kweli? С тех пор и вошло в обиход - Talib Qualy. Бесподобный ход с точки зрения брендмейкинга, не так ли? Бог с ним, любые пиар-ходы требуют подтверждения реальными делами, в случае с “Quality” все произошло именно так. Хит “Waiting For A DJ”, мега-хит “Get By”, участие в трэках альбома Bilal, Black Thought, Cocoa Brovas, Pharoahe Monch и Mos Def. Блистательная команда продюсеров в лице DJ Quick, DJ Scratch, Kanye West, Ayatollah и Megahertz. Неординарное звучание и фирменная лирика Квели. Он по-прежнему верен своему стилю: вдумчив, рассудителен, изящен и легок; один из немногих настоящих поэтов в современном хип-хопе. Недаром в 2003 году журнал The Source наградил его титулом “Lyricist Of The Year”.

В результате выпуск “Beautiful Struggle” пришлось свернуть, релиз перенесли на лето, вся команда спешно занялась переработкой уже записанного и cведенного альбома, в срочном порядке кропая новый материал. Сам же Талиб разразился гневным обращением к общественности, в котором обвинил людей, распространивших “Beautiful Struggle” в том, что они крадут еду у его детей…
